“15 August: The Day We Lost Our Father, the Cry of a Nation’s Soul”
— Md. Kamal Uddin
Today is a day of shame for the Bengali nation—today, we remember you, Bangabandhu.
Today, we remember that indomitable man who crossed the prisons of Pakistani rulers to gift us the dawn of independence.
But alas! We failed to recognize you in time, failed to protect you.
Like ungrateful children, we stood by and watched as our father was cruelly taken away, while we stood silent, letting history’s pages soak in our tears.
You were the guide to our independence, the beacon of our freedom.
You spent the golden years of your youth in the dark cells of prison—not for yourself, but for this nation alone.
Every breath you took was filled with dreams of liberation, every word you spoke carried the promise:
“Bangla will be free, Bengalis will be independent.”
And we?
We are a forgetful nation, Bangabandhu.
Just as some abandon their parents in old age, we forgot your sacrifices.
We forgot how you risked your life, how you endured the loss of your own family, just to place this red-green flag in our hands.
Today, 15 August is not only a day of mourning—it is the mirror of our conscience.
When we look into that mirror, we see our crime, our shame, our failure.
We are the children who could not protect their father, yet still speak his name with pride.
Bangabandhu, we are indebted, we are guilty, we are ashamed.
You were as steadfast as the mountains, as deep as the sea, as vast as the sky.
Your heart was as tender as a mother’s, and we are the children who stained that heart with blood.
Today, as we stand before your grave, we offer only one prayer—
O Father of the Nation, forgive us.
Perhaps we could not fulfill your dreams, but we still carry your sacrifice in our hearts and take this oath—
We will never hand over your cherished Bangladesh to the hands of darkness
